Hello, I’m Chloé and I'm French.
Before coming to the Toneelacademie I studied graphic design in Paris.
I want to tell people’s stories to help them to live with each other, to help myself to live with others.
I want to do something meaningful, to speak out and to give a voice to those who are usually not heard.
I believe theater can be a way to bring back rituals in our everyday life. Graduating is for me a researching the balance between political and poetic.
If I’m not busy with a project, I’m probably backpacking. You can have a look at my other projects here : www.chloewasselindandre.com

Praktijkproject - En chemin
'En Chemin' is a collective project about the desire to travel and the need to flee.
This project finds its origin in our collective vision of theater: to tell stories and bring experiences into dialogue. The themes of the project have been important to us as individuals for years. Now, due to the COVID19 pandemic, the urgency became stronger: we miss travelling and are aware that it became even harder to flee.
Moreover, we consider this project to be an experiment into the formation of a collective.
We also consider all members of the collective as theater makers without predefined roles.
We made this play during a residency in Turbul', a 'circus factory' in Nîmes (France). Turbul' is an organisation which stands for popular education, an alternative place which exists out
of the traditional institutions.
I invite you to first have a look at the pictures and recording of the show. After that, I will share with you
the research that led to this show, first on my own and later with the collective.
de voorstelling / the performance
A few weeks have passed since the end of the project. I first distanced myself from it for a while. I am now able to look at it with a fresh look and reflect on what we have created together.
The main focus of this project was the research process behind it rather than the performance at the end. Nevertheless, it was important for most of us to have something to show at the end.
Everything could have been better: the acting, the light design, the text, the costumes, the scenario...
But I am proud of what we managed to create in only 2 weeks despite all the logistic troubles and the diversity of people in the collective.
To me, it is like a laboratory filled with good ideas that we can work on and explore further.
onderzoek / research
In parallel, I started gathering inspiration
from the Bread and Puppet Theater to Milo Rau,
from projects I did myself to circus,
from protests to installations...
This project started when one of my teachers told me that I didn't have to join a directing student for my graduating project but that I could start my own project. I never thought about it before - suddenly this sentence opened up new opportunities and gave me a feeling of legitimacy that I could to bring people together and do a project as a collective. I decided to do work about the state of being "on the way" ("En chemin" in French).
I started to compose a collective of people who have a connection with theater but also with the theme.
I searched for a residency place that centers social convictions and placed a requests for funds.
Slowly the collective formed, as I started to contact friends who also studied theater or other forms of storytelling and had experience with traveling. One friend even brought a friend of hers to the collective. With the help of the Red Cross, two persons with a refugee background joined the project.
I first planned the residency at an inspiring and alternative cultural center, the K.A.K in Brussels.
Two weeks before the project they had to cancel our residency because of new COVID19 measures. Luckily, we quickly found another place, Turbul', a 'circus factory' in Nîmes, France.
residentie / residency
A few days before the beginning of the residency I found out that I had caught the coronavirus and had to wait a few days before I could join the rest of the collective. Following online has been very difficult. I felt alone, guilty, disconnected, stressed and lost.
But it also taught me to let it go and to rely on the strength of the collective.
Onze mening delen?
Once I joined the rest of the collective, it was still challenging. How to work as a group? How to take decisions with so many people? Who takes decisions when we attempt to not have hierarchy?
Should I have prepared more? How can I be more clear? Should I be stricter? Do we miss a director?
What is my role in this group? Why did I ask these people to join me? Does it make me responsible for everything? How do I deal with the guilt of not doing well enough? How can we make artistic choices together when we have different frames of references? When we have different conceptions of what is and isn't interesting enough to be told on stage? When we have different ideas about what we are legitimate to tell, of what is cliché and what is poetic? What are our collective intentions? Why did we individually decide to join this project? How to share personal stories in only two weeks with people we don't know? How do we make sure that everyone understands each other? In French, in Spanish or in English? Or in Persian? How do we make a show in two weeks? Do we need to always take decisions all together? Do we always need to agree on everything and give our opinion? Do we miss an authority figure taking decisions? Should I have been this person?
The pictures underneath are here to give you an idea of how rich this collective experience has been,
on a human level as well as on an artistic level.
