Ik ben Noa Müller, ik ben een van de afstudeerders van de lichting 2021 scenografie en kostuumontwerp opleiding van de toneelacademie Maastricht.
Mijn doel is om mijn ontwerpen zoveel mogelijk onderdeel te maken van het stuk, zodat alles bij elkaar kan komen en het tot leven komt. Ik wil de performer uitnodigen en uitdagen om met de vormgeving te gaan spelen.
Zodra de performer die uitdaging aangaat vind ik persoonlijk dat er iets magisch op het podium ontstaat. Zelf heb ik een grote voorliefde voor dans en bewegingstheater. Het fysieke aspect vind ik heel inspirerend en spannend.

My name is Noa Müller, I am one of the graduates of the 2021 stage design and costume design course at the theater academy Maastricht.
My goal is to make my designs part of the piece as much as possible, making everything come together and come to life. I want to invite and challenge the performer to play with the design.
As soon as the performer takes up that challenge, I personally think that something magical is created on stage. I myself have a great love for dance and movement theater. For me the physical aspect is very inspiring and exciting.

Broer en zus
In dit korte filmpje heb ik gekeken naar de gelijkenissen tussen mijn broer en mij, maar op een andere manier dan normaal. Ik heb naar specifieke delen van ons gezicht gekeken, namelijk onze ogen, oren en monden. Waarom ik dit gedaan heb is om de ruis weg te halen en te focussen op specifieke punten van het gezicht. Door die beelden naast elkaar te zetten kun je veel preciezer kijken, en wordt je niet afgeleid door alles eromheen. Zo is het me nu pas opgevallen dat onze ogen helemaal niet zo op elkaar lijken, ik heb bijvoorbeeld meer amandelvormig, en mijn broer meer spleet achtige ogen. Terwijl ik altijd dacht dat onze ogen qua vorm hetzelfde waren.
Brother and sister
In this short video I looked at the similarities between my brother and me, but in a different way than usual. I've looked at specific parts of our face, namely our eyes, ears and mouths. I did this is to remove the noise and focus on specific points of the face. By putting those images side by side, you can make a much more precise observation, not being distracted by everything around it. For example, only now I have noticed that our eyes are not that alike at all, I have more almond-shaped, and my brother more slit-like eyes. While I always thought that our eyes were the same in shape.

Othello
Concept scenografie:
Ik wil het stuk gebruiken als kritiek op de samenleving, omdat die verwacht dat we aan bepaalde sociale standaarden voldoen. Zodra dat niet het geval is, gaan we aan ons zelf twijfelen en daardoor ontstaat er veel onzekerheid. In het stuk Othello speelt dit een grote rol en tot op de dag van vandaag worden we er allemaal mee geconfronteerd. In mijn concept neem ik een specifieke samenleving en dat is de danssamenleving. Omdat het onderwerp onzekerheid en zelfbeeld daar een grote rol speelt.
Dansers worden constant met zichzelf geconfronteerd door spiegels en tijdens de lessen die ze hebben zijn ze zich constant aan het verbeteren en zich aan het aanpassen. Ook zijn er veel dansers die zichzelf vergelijken met andere, en is er sprake van grote competitie. Ik vond dat dit grote gelijkenissen had met Othello. Omdat daar jaloezie en jezelf omhoog werken ook een grote rol speelt. Een ander gegeven dat grote gelijkenissen heeft met Othello is de witte wereld waar ze in leven. De balletwereld is namelijk tot op de dag van vandaag ook een hele witte wereld. Er komen langzaam veranderingen in maar dat heeft lang geduurd.
Het is pas sinds kort dat vrouwen en mannen met een andere huidskleur balletschoenen in hun eigen kleur kunnen kopen inplaats van dat ze het zelf moeten bewerken.
Concept scenography:
I want to use the piece as a critique on society that expects us to live up to certain social standards. As soon as that is not the case, we start doubting ourselves, creating a lot of uncertainty. This plays a big role in Othello and to this day we are all confronted with it. In my concept I take a specific community, the dance community, since the subject of insecurity and self-image plays a big part in this community.
Dancers are constantly confronted with themselves by mirrors and during the classes they are constantly improving and adapting themselves. Comparisons are common between dancers, increasing competition and jealousy. Which in turn has great similarities with Othello. Because jealousy and raising yourself up also play a big role. Another great comparison to Othello is the white world they live in. The ballet world is still a very white world to this day. Changes are slowly coming, but that has already taken a long time.
Only recently it has become possible for women and men with a different skin colour to buy ballet shoes in their respective colour instead of having to modify it themselves.
OTHELLO
Concept kostuum:
Ballet is best een witte cultuur zelfs tot op de dag vandaag. In ballet kan je vooral aan de kleding zien dat het een witte cultuur is. Neem bijvoorbeeld de spitzen, ballet schoenen en panty’s die vrouwen en mannen aan hebben. Het zijn altijd beige/roze schoenen. De panty’s die vrouwen dragen zijn altijd roze.
Het is dan ook pas sinds kort dat dansers met een andere huidskleur schoenen in hun eigen huidskleur kunnen kopen.
Ik wil hier meer aandacht aangeven, aangezien er in het stuk Othello ook sprake is van discriminatie. Ik vind het onvoorstelbaar dat de balletwereld nog steeds zo’n witte cultuur is in deze tijd. Daarom heb ik ervoor gekozen dat iedereen beige balletschoen aan heeft, hierdoor zie je dat Othello er toch “buiten” valt.
Echter wil ik dit effect groter maken en laten zien dat dit probleem bij zowel mannen als bij vrouwen speelt. Vandaar de keuze om Bianca ook een donkere huidskleur te geven. In het verhaal wordt ze als minderwaardig gezien omdat iedereen haar als een hoer ziet, in mijn versie is het omdat ze een donkere huidskleur heeft. Othello wordt ook in het verhaal als minderwaardig gezien door zijn huidskleur ondanks dat hij de commandant is.
Concept costume:
Ballet is quite a white culture even to this day. This can especially be seen in the clothing. Take, for example, the points, ballet shoes and tights that women and men wear. They are always beige / pink shoes. The tights worn by women are always pink.
It is only recently that dancers with a different skin color can buy shoes in their respective skin color.
I would like to draw more attention to this, as there is also discrimination in Othello. In my opinion it is inconceivable that the ballet world is still such a white culture in this day and age. Which is why I chose for everyone to wear beige ballet shoes, because of this you can see that Othello is “an outsider”.
However, I want to make this effect even bigger and show that this problem affects both men and women. Hence, the choice to give Bianca a dark skin tone as well. In the story she is seen as inferior, because everyone sees her as a whore. In my version it is because she has a dark complexion. Othello is also seen as inferior in the story due to his skin color despite being the commander.

Wanneer komt de wereld van dans samen met de vormgeving?
Voor mijn scriptie heb ik onderzoek gedaan naar twee grote passies van mij, namelijk vormgeving en dans. In mijn scriptie is te lezen over mijn eigen ervaringen met die twee werelden en analyses van dansvoorstellingen die mij zijn bijgebleven.
